First day

J-man is at his first day of band camp.

Mom is a little bit messed up about it. I was in band all through high school, and the thought that my child is now participating in it is a little overwhelming.

He is nervous as hell.

As I should, I tried to make him feel better. As we were pulling into the school parking lot I asked him if he wanted me to walk him in. I said, "I'll walk in and say here is my little oobie woobie. Please take care of him and make him feel comfy." Then I told him I would say, "come here and give your mommy a KISS"... He said no thank you. I wonder why.

As we parked the car there was another parent walking her daughter in. I looked at him and asked him "Are you sure you don't want me to walk you in?" He said, "If you want." It was sweet to see that tough guy exterior disappear for a minute and my sweet, shy guy appear again.

I didn't embarrass him. I promise.

As we walked in the Drum Major was standing there and shook his hand as they introduced themselves.

Surreal moment of the day - J-man was as tall, if not taller, than the Drum Major. WHEN did that happen?

I pick him up around noon and cannot wait to hear what he thought of it.

His first performance is on August 2 - the day after he turns 15. I am going to be a blubbering idiot... count on it.

To me band is the best thing a kid can do - look at Squirrel - she made more friends and had the best time than a lot of kids her age and I attribute a lot of her successes to her band [ensemble and marching] experience.

He will do just great! Can't wait to see pics of the concert. Please Mom?

What instrument did you play? I played cello [argh] and flute.

I hope it does him some good... it is an experience that lasts forever!
