Carl and I took J-man to watch his soccer team play their game on Saturday. Because of his broken collar bone he is out of the game for the entire season, but we want him to still be there for his teammates. Even if it is from the sidelines.
The kids were so excited to see him. They all huddled around asking how he was doing, what it felt like, was he going to be able to play, etc. The little boy that caused the broken bone was the first to reach J-man and kept apologizing. J-man kept saying to him "it's OK!!! It was an accident!"
The team promised they would try to win the game just for him.
As the boys were chatting, Carl and I were setting up our chairs next to the mom of one of J-man's best friends on the team. C is a sweet lady, but cannot keep a secret. She has the tendency to tell you about whatever is on her mind... trust me. I've heard ALL ABOUT her Brazilian bikini wax and how small her ex-husband's member was.... no secrets!!
So she proceeded to tell me how much J-man's injury affected her son. She said, "He came running up to me after they finished practice and said 'Mom, what are we gonna do? J-man is the soul of this team. He is the most positive person we have on it. I mean, when we are losing he is the one saying it's OK... we can come back! We need him to be with us!'"
I have to tell you -- I don't think I have ever been more proud of J-man at that moment. He is a true team player and a positive influence on people. What more can a parent ask for?
BTW: His team lost. The kids were upset, but J-man was the first one to the bench after the game telling them how well they played.
God, I love that kid.

You should be extremely proud! That's gotta be an awesome thing to hear.
You know you raised a great kid [we never doubted it] when you hear that kind of unconditional praise for your son from a teammate....You should be so proud!
[ewww about the wax & the member...I would've been shooting the "TMI" look...yeah, right before I [ahem] barfed on her shoes....giggle!]
Hugs to you!
What a great kid you have!
Chris: thanks!
Skip: I did give the TMI looks, but she was oblivious. Love her to bits, though.
Lisa: You only like him 'cause he's a Jeff Gordon fan... HA!!! Thanks!
Great Kid. I bet he has tons of friends and is well like everywhere.
That's the moments that we as parents know that maybe we did something right without an instruction manual. hehehehe
That is so awesome of him!!!
I felt that way when a parent a couple years ago, called and thanked me for how wonderful kiddo was, cuz her son was new and a bit on the nerdy side and Kiddo made him feel welcomed and right at home. They are now best friends. whoooohoooooo
He's just like his Paw Paw - sweet and lovable. You should tell them what the teachers said about him.
Burfica: Good kids are hard to find these days.
Dad: We did...
what a great young man you have there
Give him lots of hugs- you know what? The world needs more guys like him.
Great kid! Don't you love those moments after all the blood, sweat and tears and wondering how they will turn out?
What a wonderful young man!
That story brought a tear to my eye (blaming it on monthly hormones)...
You and Carl are obviously doing a great job as J-man's parents.
