Un-effing-believable

Carl's job is hazardous. He deals with the dregs of society on a nightly basis. He has to talk to them, touch them, counsel them, and even fight with them on occasion.

And the city he works for is crazy. Know why? They now have a new rule in place to help conserve water. City workers can no longer wash their hands. They have to use hand sanitizer instead. They can't even drink from the water fountain... they have to drink bottled water.

In my opinion, this is insanity. Carl has contact with the people in our town. He needs to wash his hands on a regular basis. How will the city like it when their workers are out due to illness? They have sick time, but they get fussed at if they use it. And Carl is a supervisor... he has to have someone cover his shift if he's not there. That means he usually drags himself in when he doesn't feel well... he always has. Not because he wants to but because he has too. But now he can't wash his hands to make sure no one else catches whatever he has.

Makes me insane.

AND the city has "suggested" to the restaurants in our town to only serve water when it is asked for. I'm ok with that. What I'm not OK with is that they are also suggesting that the restaurants give out wet-naps to their customers... and asking that they use those instead of washing their hands.

GROSS!!!!!!!!!!

We need some rain... desperately! Can someone show me how to do a rain dance?

Wow! Sorry it's so bad there. I'd send you some of ours, but we haven't really been having much at all this year. Just little bitty drizzles every few days or so.

Not to mention that hand sanitizers are bad. Washing with soap and water is much better. Those things are creating big super-bugs with immunities to antibacterials...

Good luck!

I read this right before I was going to post about the drought here. The restrictions seem to be on city and state workers and landscaping companies only which is ridiculous. We all have a part in this. Pray for rain and conserve water!!!
So what happens if hubby is caught washing his hands? Jail time?
(Visit my blog for drought pictures I took this weekend).

Do they all have to use the toilet at the same time so they will only have to flush once a shift?

Nadine is right - overuse makes antibacterial/santizer ineffective over time....that said...we are in a drought condition too here in VA but that is ridiculous - you can't mandate people don't wash their hands...the water fountain thing is odd, but washing your hands - excuse me while I call "BULLSHIT"!

Perhaps your hubby could start wearing latex gloves? Very impersonal, I realize, but not being able to wash your hands...pshhh!

Hugs [Air hug, Air hug! wink]

I live right on the border of the navajo res, and they have been all raindancing for a few years. We are still stuck inside this 10 years now worth of drought.

I would check into that more if I was you guys. Check with the health department. It might be against the law that they say the workers can't wash their hands.

But I'm a B***h and I would push that issue.

That is a rule I would have to break. It sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen to me.

Must wash hands!

I get the drought thing, but no hand washing is just gross, especially with the growing concern of MRSA. I know alcohol-based sanitizers work well, but I don't like using them. I had a rotten experience using one and my hands got raw. I'll pray for rain for you tonight!

That is just nasty. And is the city providing bottled water to their employees to drink? I think it's a bit unreasonable (not to mention irresponsible) to tell your employees not to drink water. What if they become dehydrated while on the job?

I love hand sanitizer for when I am out but the alcohol is very drying. I can't imagine how badly my hands would feel if I was forced to use it time and time again throughout a work shift.

As for the bottled water, how much water does one person drink when they get a drink from a fountain? Certainly not as much to justify using all those plastic bottles of tap water.
