Carl woke me up around 6 a.m. on Saturday by asking "Is our doctor's office open today?" I told him that I didn't think so.... why?
"Because I'm in a lot of pain and I need to see him. I've been up since about 1."
Um... hello? WHAT?! You have been in pain for 5 HOURS and are just now waking me up? I was furious, worried, and really afraid I had jinxed him! He never gets sick, and to have him wake me up just a day or two after posting about his seizure freaked me out a bit.
I wound up taking him to the ER. They told us his EEG and heart signs were "spot on" but they want to do a stress test. They don't think he had a heart attack but want to rule it out.
What do they think it is? His gallbladder.
After he woke me up I started asking him about his pain. It's in his middle back and radiates through to his chest. It only happens at night (around 2 a.m.) and he has been having it on and off for a month! (Another WTF moment)
I had my gallbladder removed in 1997 and I had the exact pains. I told Carl what I thought it was before we went to the ER and then the doctor confirmed it. He will not only get the stress test to rule out the heart attack, he also gets to have an ultasound done on his gallbladder.
If that is what it is... he will have to have surgery.
Want to see a grown man go pale and leap into a hearty case of denial? Tell him the S word...
So did I jinx him?
oops.

Nope. He just wants to be just like you.
Naw, you didn't jinx him. He's been having these pains for about a month, well BEFORE you posted your seizure blog.
I hope that he doesn't need surgery. It's always a scary prospect. I'll keep my fingers crossed....
Surgery is always a scary prospect but I hope that it is indeed his gallbladder and not heart-related.
I am curious about how he has managed to "hide" his gallbladder pain. When mine started acting up I thought I was going to die from the pain. Childbirth hurt less. My surgery was a welcome relief, although I wish someone would have told me how much you hurt afterwards.
Maybe you sensed something without knowing it? Everything happens for a reason. He'll be fine. But don't forget to take care of yourself too.
Beth: Bless him if he does!
Biddie: Appreciate the crossed fingers!
CCW: He works nights so he can hide it well. When he was home, he would sneak out of bed. I thought I was a light sleeper, but I guess not!
Lisa: Maybe I did... he'll be OK. Just have to make sure he follows up with all his appointments.
Ok, as someone who had his gallbladder removed (at 17, no less), I did try to "tough it out" the first few times I felt that pain. I tried to relate it to various foods I ate, etc. trying to find the cause and eliminate it myself. Of course, that didn't work, and I eventually ended up begging my parents to take me to the emergency room in the middle of the night.
Also, on the subject of "You have been in pain for 5 HOURS and are just now waking me up?" A few months ago, my wife woke up in the morning and found that I was sleeping in the living room rather than in bed. She wondered what was going on and was none too happy when she found out that I woke up because my uvula was swollen (it was an allergic reaction and no big deal, but made sleeping normally difficult) and that instead of waking her up, I went to research it online to see if it was anything worth worrying about. I, of course, thought it was a good thing not to bother her unless absolutely necessary.
We'll do a lot of things to avoid having to wake you guys up...or more specifically, to avoid having to deal with you after we wake you up.
Gosh -- how scary! No, you didn't jinx him, but I'm sure glad that you got him to the ER to check out what was wrong with him!
VERY glad it wasn't a heart attack, though I hear that gall bladder attacks are extremely painful. I have never had those, thank God, but I have had a kidney stone that was a real lulu.
Good luck, and I hope Carl isn't in any more pain.
You didn't jinx him, but I can definitely feel for him. I had mine out about 3 years ago. I kept having this pain when I would breath in deep (and would almost collapse it hurt so bad) and then I thought it was just something I had hurt working out or something. It continued but not all the time. Then one night I woke up in the middle of the night and practically crawled to the bathroom - gasping the whole way - and thought "I'm going to have to call 911". I couldn't believe it. I finally got back to bed and decided I better go to the doctor the next day. I was not in the same pain so I couldn't exactly explain where it was and what it was like. They finally figured it was gallbladder and I had it out.
I was doubly blessed the following year by waking up to a weird feeling on my side. It kept me awake (which is unusual). I tried to go back to sleep but could not get comfortable and after going to web md I thought I was either having a problem with my appendix or SERIOUS GAS. It was my appendix and it was just great to go back to the hospital for emergency surgery.
The after hospital drugs were wonderful though. I didn't mind that so much, just the soreness after the surgeries.
Good luck to Carl. He'll be fine.
Nah. You were just probably picking up the vibes.
