A few weeks ago I watched High School Musical with the kids. I couldn't help but compare it to what I would consider the original high school musical... Grease.
I LOVE Grease. I love Danny, Sandy, Rizzo, Frenchie, Putzie... everyone. It makes me giddy. It makes me happy. I can sing every song (even the ones in the background)... and can quote pretty much half the movie, too. Several of my favorite sayings came straight from this movie. "Grab it and growl" and "Peachie keen jelly bean" are amongst the ones I say the most.
I'm a geek.
Anyhoo...
The comparison:
1. Boy and girl meet while on vacation
2. Boy and girl go their seperate ways after said vacation thinking they will never see one another again
3. Girl winds up going to boy's school
4. Boy and girl have a hard time being together because of friendships and plain ol' stupidity
5. Boy and girl find a way to be together by the end
6. LOTS of singing and dancing
Since watching HS Musical and then getting hooked on Grease: You're the One That I Want, I have been itching to see the movie. I picked up a copy this weekend. (YES, I purchased a copy!) I sat down with the kids to watch it.
Bug is now a fan. She thinks Danny is "sooooo cute!" (I went online and found a picture of John Tavolta now... she wasn't impressed) She walks around the house saying "It's electrifying" so much that it is borderline tolerable. I'm glad she likes it though... we watched it again on Sunday... she's learning the songs... I'm a happy girl.

My kids have been singing the Grease soundtrack ever since they could talk. It drives Hubby crazy, but I don't mind one bit. I only have an old VHS copy that I bought years ago, and the kids have been bugging for a new DVD.
J has Highschool Musical. She got it for her birthday, and I still haven't seen it all the way through. Couldn't bear it....
We got Highschool Musical! Biddie gave it to my girl for Christmas!
I watched it all the way through. My son darn near puked. My girl liked it a lot!
I thought it was beautiful to look at. The colours and the lighting are amazing. I was irritated with the music though. So well written (Jethro used to work with one of the writers) and yet so bad sounding. Autotune everywhere, canned instruments.
But good clean fun. No swearing, no violence.
Now I must read about your dog...
I'm a sucker for musicals, even ones that aren't that good. I watched High School Musical in my apartment, flipping to anther movie when a roommate walked by. Grease is definitely better.
grease is a great film its the one that i want!
I love Grease. I love Grease 2 (in a cheesy "I know it's not nearly as good as the original" kind of way). The show "Grease, you're the one that I want" makes my skin crawl.
Highschool Musical was enjoyable... my kids liked it a lot. I didn't really think about the similarities before.. wow!
Loved Grease. My Mom took me to the theatre to see it. Then I had to buy the album, I wore it out so then I had to buy the CD. Love to sing with it and yes, I too know most of the dialogue
I agree with Amy. Although Grease 2 could never be as good as the original but Michelle Pfiffer was awesome and the Aussie was too cute. I love "Cool Rider" and the season song the girls sing in the talent show. Michelle was hot and made a more believable bad girl - but I have a soft spot for Olivia.
I think I need to see Highschool Musical. I too love musicals old and new. The campier sometimes the better.
I loved Grease! I'm also a big fan of The Sound of Music and Dirty Dancing. There's nothing like a good musical to lift the spirits.
