One down

My first week at the new job is compelete. Many of you have emailed or posted asking me how it is going. I can sum it up in one word...

eh

I spent the entire week at my new desk watching training courses over the computer. I went to one meeting and out to lunch twice. I've met some wonderful folks and think I'll be fine, but this week has been draining.

I've told you that I'm working with one of my good friends - JA. We have known each other for years. We worked together at my old job until he left to persue other opportunities. Well... it seems a new rumor has ALREADY popped up in regards to us. Yes, people are asking what is the "deal" between us. We go to breakfast in the morning, we are seen together in the hallways (he's showing me around)... Yes, my friends, people already think I'm the office slut. Well, at least when it comes to JA.

Luckily, the people that have been approached about this predicament are on my team and have set the record straight. I wish people would ask ME or JA about it... sometimes I really hate working in an office environment! I'm not angry. I think it's funny because I know what kind of relationship I have with JA... oh well. Eventually people will see there is nothing to talk about.

Now... let's talk about my commute. My crappy, crappy commute. The mornings are OK. I make it to work in about 40-45 minutes. The afternoons, though? Oh. My. God. Two nights this week it took me over an hour and a half to get home.

I'm not a patient driver. I cuss. I rant. I rave. I am one of those people you laugh at. I have really been tested the past few days. I have to constantly tell myself to calm down and that there is nothing I can do about it. (There is, but I've only been there a week)

I just have to stay patient. I get my first project on Monday so I won't be spending all my time looking at the ramp-up training courses. (BTW - I've watched about 19 of them and still have 10-15 to go!) I'll have work to do. I'll feel productive.

Maybe once that happens I won't think I've made a HUGE mistake.

Glad to hear that your first week went well Marni! I also suffer from mild road rage. Well, it's moderate, sometimes manic... Okay, that's enough. I am happy for you!! :)

You made it. What an accomplishment. I know it was hard to decide to leave. You have made many friends from your last job, but knowing you, you will meet many new people and they will all love you.

I believe you said you have XM radio. Maybe you should start listening to Christian music during the bad traffic days. Also, I think you said you could tele-commute. As soon as you get the green light, "punch it Betty, punch it".

Another option is to get books on tape (or CD if that is what you have). Nothing wrong with hearing a novel versus reading it. Another thing you could do is learn languages during traffic. Not a bad thing to do. You just need to find things that calm you down (alcohol would work for me but it's probably not such a good idea while driving) while you are driving. Believe me, driving from 285 and 75 to Chastain Road daily tries a person. Most of my drive is on the phone so it's OK. That way I'm not on the phone while I'm at home. Maybe you should up your phone minutes...oh wait, you work at a place that should have unlimited minutes (hee, hee, hee).

That commute sounds brutal. The first week is down, the rest will get easier.
Great music always help to pass the time.

I totally understand your commuting issues. I used to work on the far south side of the city, which is about 15 mile from my place (on the north side). Despite the relatively short distance, it would sometimes take up to 2 hours to get home during rush hour. On those days, I was always so angry at everyone around me and would scream and cuss all the way home. Needless to say, I wasn't a very happy person when I worked at that school. :)

The first week is so weird and draining, isn't it? Hope the new project is a good one.

Looking forward to next week's celebration!
