30 Days of Truth: Day 22

Something you wish you hadn't done in your life

I don't have very many regrets in my life. Other than wasting a year and a half with the crazy idiot, I can honestly say I don't feel bad about much.

Except one thing. And it bothers me A LOT.

I was young... probably 10 or 11... and thought I was SOOOO smart. My parents and I went to a Christmas party at a house of a couple of their friends. These friends had a little girl who was probably 4 or 5. She was so cute and innocent. There were a couple of other kids there my age, but this little girl was, by far, the youngest.

Somehow, as kids are wont to do, we started talking about how excited we were to open our presents. The sweet kid said she couldn't wait to see what Santa was going to bring her.

Me - being the ass that I was - told her who Santa really was.

The look on her face was awful. I mean, I ruined it ALL for her. That look still haunts me and taints the joy (a little) of Christmas for me. I think that is why I was SO adamant about making Christmas and Santa so important to the kids.

I apologized many, many years later and she said it was OK. But, dayum, it still makes me cringe to think about it.

Funny how our thoughts and feelings change on that as we get older. I always swore that I would never go along with the Santa thing with my daughter because I remember how crushed I was in first grade when someone ruined it for me. And yet, here I am with my kiddo, loving every minute of her wide-eyed innocence when she talks about Christmas and Santa.
